Wow~ In The City

When we go to the city, often we feel like foreigners looking at all the selection of these big American stores. We often feel a little out of place at first when in the city. But it is also fun to see some of neat and weird things we do not have in our little store in our small town. We liked this picture made from license plates. We collected license plates for a long time. We were thinking of using our license plate collection as siding on our out house building we built this summer. We also found these fuzzy lamps to be very funny. They were fun to look at but we found a picture of them was all we needed. We just couldn’t waste money on them. It is amazing how much neat “stuff” there is to spend your money on, and it really does not make your life that much better. :)

A trip to the big city when there was snow on the ground when I was a kid in Alaska’s boonies…meant, a provisional warm-up of the vehicle while affixing chains to the tires. Mother always threw a couple sacks of kitty litter in the trunk. (When Dad drove a VW bus, the catalytic heater went in the back and we took turns warming actually ’scorching’ our feet first one side then the other).

There’s nothing quite like the big highly sprung deep horsehair bench seat in the back of a Packard with the steady constant clamor of tire chains, slightly musty smell of the seat stuffing, and spurts of warmly heated air to send one to a drowsy netherworld (maybe a little carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion, too). Sometimes, when we got home to the lightly heated garage, we wanted to continue dreaming in sleep until the night air seeped under the garage doors chilling us to the bone.

Once a month teacher’s salary went for once a month shopping at the bakery and other food supply outlets (ten family members), and a box of Tiger Tails for the ride home.

I laughed out loud at this post. I totally identify. Sometimes when we are in the city gauking others look at us strangley wondering from what planet we just landed. Oh well, I wouldn’t trade my life for a city one. I like the license tags too. By, the way, I have NOT forgotten about the box I am supposse dto send you. When we finally landed back in PA 3 months late I had missed almost all of the yard sales where I was hoping to get items for you all but I still think about it. I will get there sometime before your children are fully grown ;-)
