Here is a news article about a bus accident that happened Tuesday morning on the News Miner web site. It happened on Chena Hot Springs “Raceway” were Anna grew up.
FAIRBANKS — A small school bus carrying no children burst into flames following a head-on collision with a van at 10 1/2 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road on Tuesday, injuring three people, including one woman who was airlifted to Seattle with what Alaska State Troopers described as “critical” burns.
Mary L. White, 64, of North Pole, who was the lone passenger in the bus, suffered serious burns on her face and body. She was transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Seattle.
The bus driver, Vicky L. Glebavicius, 42, of North Pole, suffered a broken leg in the accident. The driver of the van was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.
The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. and closed Chena Hot Springs Road for about five hours.
The 1974 Ford Van was heading west toward Fairbanks when the driver lost control coming around a turn and veered into the opposite lane where it collided head on with the bus, according to Alaska State Trooper Lee Bruce.
The back of the bus burst into flames upon impact, according to witnesses.
White and Glebavicius already were out of the burning bus when Abbie West of Two Rivers came upon the accident. White was kneeling down, putting snow on her face and Glebavicius was standing in the road in shock, she said.
“Is there anyone on the bus — that’s the first question I asked,” West said. “When they said no, I said, ‘Thank God.’”
Worried the bus was going to explode, West directed White and Glebavicius away from the bus into cars that had arrived on scene. The driver of the van, who was trying to retrieve items from the van as it burned, also was in shock, she said.
The bus “was a huge ball of flame,” according to Jeremy McFaul, who pulled up immediately after the crash to assist West. The van, which ended up in the snow off the road, also was on fire.
“Pretty much everything was on fire,” McFaul said.
West, who was on her way to the finish of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race in Fairbanks, said the van passed her about two miles before the crash. She saw a plume of black smoke rise up as she came around the corner.
“The driver of the bus said when she saw the van coming at her, (the van) was already spinning,” West said.
Judging from the seriousness of the burns White suffered, there had to be some kind of explosion, West said.
“It had to be a blast,” she said. “Everything on her was burned.”
The fact the bus burst into flames upon impact is “very disconcerting,” Steese Area Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mitch Flynn said.
Officials with First Student, the bus company, could not be reached for comment regarding the accident.
Flynn shuddered to think what would have happened had there been children on the bus.
“We dodged a bullet on this one,” the fire chief said. “A big bullet.”
Our new sled has been getting a workout. It is a “Jet Sled Jr.” The company that made it also makes a couple of sizes bigger than this one. We plan to get one of those later. But for now this new sled has been proving itself by serving dual duty. The children have been having a great time sledding, and a little less fun hauling wood to the woodshed. Here you can see the sled loaded with wood and children. It seems to be made well, very sturdy. Hopefully we will get many years to come of use out of it.

There is also a picture of of our pile of firewood we are trying to rescue from being snowed on. We got a real good deal on a three chord load of cut and split fire wood delivered by dump truck. But the truck left a 125 foot long train of wood in our driveway, and then it snowed! We had a “loader” come and do some snow removal for us and at the same time scrape the fire wood in one pile. So now we have a mountain of wood that is about 5 feet tall.

I got flowers! We do not have a place here that sells flowers regularly, so when Jason saw they had flowers at our grocery store for V-Day he said he had to get me some. He bought we flowers often when we lived in the real world. So it was nice to once again smell pretty flowers. He still goes out and picks flowers for me in the summer, since there are none to be had any other way.
I found this new Headcovering in a box of stuff that was packed and lost since shortly after we moved into our new house here. So in a way even though I have had it for a couple years, it is still new to me. I ordered this one from on line. It is reversible Light Blue and Dark Blue with a trim of lace. It ties nicely behind like my bandanna’s. Jason took these pictures of me while I was on the phone talking to his sister, while I was holding Vision, who is almost nine months old now. Anyhow I will have to make a few of these.
We love hamburger stew/soup. It is a favorite for sure. When it is cold we have it for supper all the more. It is nice to have a simple food without a rigid recipe. We always make it by feel. I don’t include any seasoning or measurements in this post because it seems to be something that varies from family to family. We love garlic, pepper and onion in most food. Zesty is better as a rule of thumb for us.
Jason brought home more bell peppers that were on sale from the store tonight. Read more on our bell pepper fun here if you haven’t read our post on chopping bell peppers.
Here is what we did for dinner tonight.
Jason chopped
1 small onion,
1 yellow bell pepper,
1 orange bell pepper,
2 stalks of celery
As I fried 2 lbs of hamburger with some seasonings (we often make this using MOOSE, CARIBOU, or BEAR burger too).
Next I added some boiled egg noodles and 2 cans of mixed veggies and 1 can of green beans with juice (depending on where you are in the country you may have better access to fresh or frozen).
Then I made a gravy from the drippings (you could also choose to thicken yours with corn starch or potato starch as also depending on mood). Also sometimes we use tomato sauce with, or instead of, gravy depending on the flavor you want.
Then I add the meat, and the gravy, and adjust the thickness by adding water until desired consistency is achieved. Then I season the soup until it tastes just right.
This is not a time to sit still and wait. Please pass this on. Post it to your blogs. It is serious for our entire nation. Tell family members and grandparents to act. Even if they do not home educate, they will see the seriousness of this situation.

To All Home Educators,
For a number of years I have been monitoring a very important treaty; U.N. Convention on the Rights of a Child.
Originally prepared for the Senate ratification by the Bush Administration (Bush Sr), this treaty was prevented by conservative Senator Jesse Helms.
This treaty is probably one of the most dangerous documents to parents and their rights to direct the education of their children. One of my main concerns with the election of Obama was the appointment of Hillary Clinton as Sec of State. For years she has been determined to bring this treaty forward (while as 1st Lady). And now, with the power in Congress and Whitehouse, this now a very real issue. Today I received an important email from parentalrights.org (founded by HSLDA founder Michael Farris):
SENATOR BOXER ASKS STATE DEPARTMENT TO EXPEDITE THE U.N. CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD
After Ambassador Susan Rice s inability to make an iron-clad commitment for immediate ratification, Boxer will ask Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for U.S. support of the UNCRC.
The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which opponents say could destroy American sovereignty by imposing international rulings on American law, could reach the Senate within 60 days. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) says she wants a 60-day timeframe for the State Department to complete its review so the Senate can move toward ratification of the UNCRC.
During the Senate Confirmation hearing between Boxer and UN
Ambassador-designate Susan Rice held on January 15, 2009, Boxer told Rice the UNCRC would protect the most vulnerable people of society.
Opponents vehemently disagree. Under the Supremacy Clause (Article VI) of the U.S. Constitution, ratified treaties preempt state law. Since virtually all laws in the U.S. regarding children are state laws, this treaty would negate nearly 100% of existing American family law. Moreover, it would grant the government authority to override parental decisions by applying even to good parents a standard now only used against those convicted of abuse or
neglect.
In the hearing, Rice promised to review the treaty but noted challenges of domestic implementation. Rice also resisted a strict time frame: I don’t have a sense of how long it will take us, in light of the many different things on our plate, she said.
Calling it a complicated treaty, Rice expressed her commitment to the treaty s objectives, but when Rice concluded that she could not meet the Senator strict time frame, Boxer said they would take it up with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
In light of this news, many are asking us, What can I do to help stop this treaty and preserve parental rights and American sovereignty? The answer is, become a PRO-Active 10-and-2 Representative. Petition signatures will help. Sending emails, post cards, or phone calls to your Congressman and Senators will help more. But signing up as a 10-and-2 Representative will do so much more.
First, instead of just one signature, you will recruit 10 in addition to your own. Instead of 1 post card or call to each representative, you will generate 11 (including yourself). Most importantly, though, 10-and-2 Reps recruit 2 more people to do the same thing, so we grow exponentially. We know you can t invest 40 hours a week and collect hundreds of signatures, but you can have that same impact in just 2-4 hours as a PRO-Active 10-and-2 Representative.
To get full details and sign up as a 10-and-2 Representative, to make a donation to fund these efforts, or simply to sign the petition, visit http://www.parentalrights.org/join-the-fight.

Justice Candidate a Threat to Parental Rights
February 10, 2009 — wilkinson4jesusI found this on the Home School Legal Defense web page. I guess this was expected when we got Obama in office. Socialism is coming and the rights of parents will fade away. This is the “Change” he spoke of….
Justice Candidate a Threat to Parental Rights
February 6, 2009
David Ogden has been nominated by President Barack Obama to the position of deputy attorney general of the United States, the second highest position in the Justice Department. His hearings are scheduled for today, February 5, 2009.

Note: It would be best to call the local offices of your senators in your state, as phone lines on Capitol Hill are tied up by voters concerned about pending economic stimulus legislation.
Home School Legal Defense Association urges all of its members to immediately telephone both U.S. senators from your state to oppose the nomination of David Ogden.
The most important reason to oppose Ogden’s nomination is his belief that the rules found in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are already binding on the United States under the doctrines of international law.
In the Supreme Court case of Roper v. Simmons, 543 U.S. 551 (2005), Ogden argued in a brief that the rules banning the juvenile death penalty contained in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child were customary norms of international law “binding on all states.”
For background information on this doctrine, see Michael Farris’ article, “A Deeper Understanding of the Threat of International Law” in the November/December 2007 Home School Court Report.
This means that Ogden believes that the legal rules contained in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are already binding on the United States, even though this treaty has never been sent to the U.S. Senate for ratification.
Homeschoolers have long understood the dangers of this international treaty, which contains the core principle that the government may decide what it believes is best for each child without any proof of wrongdoing by the child’s parents. Ogden promoted the use of this UN treaty in the Supreme Court to reach the conclusion that America’s courts have the power to overrule state law, using international law as their guidepost for constitutional interpretation. Unfortunately, he was successful in doing so in the Roper case.
It also means that Ogden is a proven advocate for the position that international law should be used to interpret the Constitution of the United States and bind the decisions of our elected officials.
If this weren’t enough, Ogden has a history of representing Playboy and other purveyors of pornography in high-profile legal cases. He also challenged the legality of using filters on library computers to protect children from seeing pornography. It would be hard to imagine how Ogden would faithfully enforce the nation’s pornography laws if he is placed in this position at the Justice Department.
The United States Senate needs to understand right now that the American public will not countenance the idea of the nation being led by people who believe that international law trumps American law.
Please call both of your U.S. Senators today to register your opposition to David Ogden.
