A Turn for the Colder

Fourtyfive below zerow Just as we were happily enjoying the warm temperatures, the bottom fell out beneath us! It dropped down to -45 below zero in one week! Last we were had the warmth of the Chinook as mentioned in our last post. But it was not to last and in one week we saw the temperature fall 75 degrees!

Sixty below zero

That would be like those of you in “the lower 48″ having 100 degrees one day, then in less than a week dropping to 25 degrees.

Interestingly our other thermometer seems to be off from the other. They are hanging so close together they touch. When it is warm they read the same but as the temperature drops they get further apart. Both of these pictures were taken the same time one at -45 the other at -62. No wonder people get so many different temperatures at their homes.

CHINOOK

CHINOOK (Shin-ook)

For the 22nd of January we are at home with the idea of -40 to -60 or more temperatures below zero. But on this day we experienced the wonderful “Arctic” phenomenon known as a “CHINOOK”! A warm wind blowing in warming our arctic blues. It warmed us all the way up to an amazing 30 degrees ABOVE zero! So warm we didn’t even need a jacket to go put the dog out potty.

Chinook sleding

The kids went out to play at 5:00pm (it is still getting dark at 4:30pm) and played for a long time getting lots of built up energy released. They did some sledding but mostly running around. The extreme cold weather we have here does not keep the kids from playing out side, but keeps them from playing as much or as long. So this was a real treat.

Chinook thermometer 30 above
The temperature has dropped back to about -25 which is much more normal for mid to late January. February is normally a cold month for us as well a time when the -60’s are well expected. Here is a picture of the 30 above thermometer reading! Also you will notice our thermometer goes to -100. Although we will most likely never see that, we have seen -72 below (Jan. 1999) on a day Jason was working out doors of all thing in a lumber yard. But cold weather doesn’t stop us to often here, just slows us down.

“Quiverfull or Birth Control”

“Quiverfull or Birth Control”

I am one of only two children. I always wanted five or six children of my own, as far back as I can remember. But was always told “you don’t know what your saying”, or “you will change you mind when you get older”.

When I met Jason, the youngest of three. He was open to the idea of children, but like most, he thought that three or so children, was about the most any couple should have. After all “houses and cars are built for smaller families”.

We married at the age of twenty four. We lost our first child at three months gestation. It was devastating. As our dreams fell down, we tried to move on. We did get pregnant again soon after and had our first, a son. As we had our second child (a daughter), we were debating on having more or not.

A couple that we are friends with, started talking about this idea, of giving God control and being “Quiverfull”. From the Bible verse Psalm 127.

Psalm 127:3-5

3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him.

4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are sons born in one’s youth.

5 Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

When they visited we had a few good conversations, even if Jason and I thought they lost their minds! They told us about how “the pill” and “other forms of birth control” were nothing more than a form of abortion! We researched this and found this to be true. What else were we to do for birth control? We had been trying for our third baby, but had been looking at birth control options for after that. But the tide was beginning to change as we brought our questions to our pastors, because we were part of the pastoral staff. Surely our pastors could answer our questions. We spent hours talking with them and they couldn’t answer our questions any better than we could. They were not really negative to the idea, but they were probably beginning to wonder about their choice of putting us on staff. But our questions being solidly grounded in the bible, they could not refuse either.

Then we got pregnant with baby number three (another daughter). After she was born at nap time and bed time while I fed her I took advantage of the time and read books. One of those books would change our views on having children altogether. Even though we viewed children as a blessing and that God said be fruitful and multiply we still thought it was our decision. The book was “A Mom Just Like You” by Vikki Farris and Jayme Metzgar. It is mostly a story of their homeschooling journey but in it she expounded on her journey into the quiverfull lifestyle.

The points she made caused me to start thinking maybe God had more for us, and we should submit to Him not peoples’ standards. I asked Jason about having “More” and he was not to open to the idea. Maybe one or two more, but the idea of “giving God complete control” in this area was crazy to him. However he was continually stretched by the Biblical truths and comments I shared from the book I was reading. I was submissive to him and did not push it, but rather prayed that if it was Gods Idea, He would have to change Jason and I’s heart in this area.

With more questions than when we started, our “ship of selfish living was sinking fast”. We decided to pray about it and leave it to God. In this time period God united our hearts on this issue. Giving us the unity only God could give. Together we are unshakable and a solid front to all that would speak against Gods plan whether the attack comes from family, friend or stranger. We are not divided.

bible

When we decided to give God complete control and we had our fourth child (our third daughter) we took much criticism. And with number five on the way, people are more rude than ever, but I am sure it comes from the pain or grief they must live with from not submitting themselves to God completely. We pray for them and are sad that so many harbor the spirit of abortion in their hearts.

We are now committed that only God will be our birth control! He opens and closes the womb. And we have put our full trust in him. Whether we have one more or 10 more. God is more than able to provide for us, his provision is not limited by the number of children you do or don’t have. If he is giving us the blessings we will not refuse them. It still amazes me how our nation is so open to more credit and debt which is a curse, and denies the blessings of God, closing their womb! Or even aborting the gift of God! Thank God for his mercies that were on us before we saw the truth, and let that mercy rest on our nation.

Simple Living & Homesteading in a New Millennium

Simple Living & Homesteading in a New Millennium

We have been working on our new home for a year and a half now. All ready it has been a year since we moved in all the way. Our home is our “small five acre Homestead”. Alaska does not have any free land open for “official homesteading” any more. But as found in most states, the spirit of the homesteading movement stays alive in people who thrive on the idea of self reliant living. Of coarse that means different levels of reality to different people. As we live in a world of modern gadgets and glitter. In this new millennium, there are many new challenges to the homestead hopefuls’. The same as the pioneers before us, is the desire to get out of “this worlds system” and “entanglements” and be free. Now we fight not only the soil, but against the flow of a society, that is against the very idea of self reliant living. With its fast paced way of life.

old timers

In our new millennium many things are made easy for those whom hope to reap from their own soil. The trail has been broken ahead, and we have many more inventions, and tools that will spare us from knowing the depth of the hardships, of the people who went before us.

Our goal on our small five acres homestead, is to be as self reliant as we can. To be free from the worlds system as much as possible. To be more able to help and minister to others.

Our hearts desire was to build our own home without the Bank. So we would not have the strain of a mortgage. So we wouldn’t be financially enslaved for the best years of our lives. (The word mortgage comes from the old French meaning “death pledge!”) Our goal is to be debt free as possible. Owing nothing, but the debt of love.

Learning to live without is hard, if not impossible to many! For some to even think about simplifying their lives makes them upset. They live for their stuff. We believe that way of thinking, has the cart before the horse. Their stuff should exist solely to help free them, to do the work of the Lord. We should never love something that cant love us back.

homesteaders

So how many extras in life do we have, that we could live without? Cable TV bills? Cell phone bills? Car payments? Pre-packaged foods? To big of a house? There has been a movement of people who have shunned these. Many have even managed to live “off the grid” (Power Line Free!) and they have done well with it! It sounds great and idealistic, but as of yet we have some issues with it. We like our indoor plumbing, (electric well pump), microwave, refrigerator and freezer, and of course the COMPUTER, but even so one must ask them selves how much better off we would be if chose a life style of “SIMPLE LIVING”, or at least less complicated than the life style many chase trying to keep up with the “neighbors”.

Cooking from scratch is a big help. Cooking meals you can eat off of for several days, like turkey- turkey sandwiches-turkey tacos… and so on. Really helps to stretch your budget while trying to live on a tighter purse string. Also not being to proud (or picky) to eat left overs helps.

Thrift shops and yard sales are a big help too. Also we save our kids clothes and pass them down from one child to the next. We don’t have to buy any kids clothes up to size eight or nine. With the exception of trying to get more dresses and skirts and tights, for the girls. We have friend in Washington who sent us a hole box of dresses and such, It really helped. As we are trying to have the girls dress more feminine.

Gardening is a big help to being self reliant. However our first attempt at a small garden flopped. Much had to do with not having the soil mixed good enough with fertilizer and trace elements. Also we have been told that the first year of garden here in Alaska never does as well. It takes more time for the stuff to work in to the soil.

cabage
Our Baby Cabbage

However when we hope to get over this and get a good harvest. It is a must to have a good stock of canning supplies. Storing your harvest to use through out the year is essential. Also buying store bought canned goods in cases when on sale helps to fill in the voids, of food you don’t grow yourself. Fresh produce is not much of an option here in Alaska if you are trying to be careful with your money. Some produce is to be had when it is in season or on sale but you can not rely on good prices all the time when it comes to produce. Also we have found that the feed store in Fairbanks sells 50 lbs bags of whole wheat flour for less than you can get it in the grocery store. Also they have great prices on wheat berries and brown rice. Getting rid of the white rice and white flour is great for your health, and taste better too. It also is more filling and nourishing.

We have had birds (chickens, ducks, and turkeys) many years. Some years having almost one hundred birds. It is a lot of fun but also a lot of work when it is butchering time. We usually break it up over a couple days. It is nice having all that meat in the freezer. It is also nice having hormone free meat that doesn’t shrink like the store bought meat.

chickens
Our Chickens Last Summer

However with the cost of buying chicks every year, and the cost of buying feed, makes it almost cheaper to buy the store meat. So these are the two areas we need to work on getting our hens to set on eggs (we have had several start but and quit), so we don’t need to buy chicks every year. Also we need to find something we can grow in Alaska in mass amounts, that we can use for feed or a feed supplement. We have a friend that grow extra rhubarb for her chickens, but not sure if that would do it? Getting the feed cost down would be a must to make this work for continual self reliant living. We were wanting to look into the possibility of meat goats or sheep. But getting feed cost down a little more would really help.

FREEDOM
FREEDOM IS CALLING!

Others are facing trials of other kinds in different geographical regions. Different weather, growing seasons, geography, and logistics all play a factor on how self reliant one can be. And lets not forget money, it takes a good chunk of it as well to get started. But the basic question still remains, how much are you willing to sacrifice? What is your minimum requirement or bottom line? Can you shed some of the world to gain some freedom with your family? Where is your treasure? Your heart will be found there as well.

Faults with the Gestational Diabetes Test

Faults with the Gestational Diabetes Test

Gestational Diabetes is tested for in pregnant women around 24-28 weeks. It involves drinking this nasty glucose water and testing the blood sugar levels. I have always hated this test because I hate drinking the SWEET liquid. Talk about making a pregnant woman want to gag! I am nearing my twenty third week. So I have been doing a lot of looking into this test. I was in hopes of finding an alternate. Instead this is a synopsis of what I have found on line while researching.

glucola

There seems to be a lot of bad science and research involved in the studies that led to this (almost mandatory) testing of thousands of women. To begin the testing did not start with a baseline of women who tested negative for diabetes before pregnancy. There is a chance that some of these women could have been silent diabetic, or borderline diabetic before pregnancy. Also there are different percentages of blood sugar, naturally occurring between nationalities. And they have a one size fits all approach. The first study on this was done on women of different progressions of gestation. They are using these test results to judge womens blood sugar levels who are only in the 24-28 week range. This is faulty because the blood sugar level increases during gestation. Also if this testing was going to help prevent complications with baby or mother, then it should be done sooner as the baby has developed past many critical stages. By the time the diagnosis is made and efforts are begun to assist this condition it is nearing the end of the pregnancy.

The efforts to correct gestational diabetes, often cause more harm and more unnecessary risk (of having a C-Section). With gestational diabetes “they claim” that there is a higher chance of having a larger baby, causing greater chances of C-Section, and other complications. The very thing they claim to avoid (C-Section) is more likely to happen because of being labeled as “High Risk”, with knife happy Doctors.

During the care for gestational diabetes, there are more doctor visits, more monitoring, more ultrasounds, additional medical support (nutritionist etc.), and testing. Not to mention more stress and pressure added to Mom and Baby. They can try to control the birth weight of the baby through the mothers diet, and insulin. Not even knowing if the desired results are obtainable, for this particular mother.

In closing I have found that “Jelly beans”, “Juice”, and other substitutes have been used successfully in place of the yucky drink. If possible you may choose to fore go the test all together (as I plan to), depending on your comfort with the idea and your medical history, and if it is ok with your Doctor, or Midwife. If not you may even explore changing Doctors. Here are three of the many links I have found useful in my research on this topic. I hope it is useful to you and pass it on to others that may benefit. There seems to be little benefit to the mother or baby, it only does a good job of padding the pocket of the medical establishment!

Serenity Rose’s 7th Birthday!

Serenity Rose’s 7th Birthday!

Wow, how time flies. Christmas is past. New Years is gone, and I am just now getting this post on Serenity Rose’s birthday finished! Serenity Rose celebrated her 7th birthday the week before Christmas. She had a rough time waiting all year long. But like we told her, it would come (and now it’s gone).

I made a rhubarb cake, for her birthday cake, (it came out great, I will post the recipe later) and Jason’s parents came over and brought the ice cream to go with (Yum). We couldn’t find a lighter around the house (usually keep one for lighting birthday and emergency candles), so Jason decided to light the candles with a torch that was handy.

Serenity Rose took a couple of tries to get the candle out. But she did it! Then she opened presents and the children had a good time playing, as we visited with his parents.

The next day we had unexpected visitors from Fairbanks! My parents drove all the way here to share a visit with us for Serenity’s Birthday and Christmas! Boy were we surprised. We had a very nice visit. Serenity had her birthday all over again. She didn’t seem to mind. Then all to soon they had to leave for home, (it can be a 4 hour drive to their house).

Here is Serenity Rose and a couple of her new treasures!

Out Our Window

Out our window-Panorama 3
I had to try the program that was on the computer to “stitch” the photos together to make a panorama. It worked good on these 5 or 6 pictures from our upstairs window. I will try it again on a clearer day so you can see the mountains even better. But this is what we see every morning. Notice how low the sun is at the mountain tops as it is only 1:00 pm. This was taken today 2nd of Jan 08. Still middle of winter so it will be getting dark by 4:00 PM. But we are on the upswing, gaining more daylight every day! Until this summer we will have nearly 24 hours of daylight. That makes it all worth it to us!
