Butchering Time!

Butcher time
Today was a day, filled with adventure. We butchered our chickens and the kids loved the excitement of it all! The the last one tried to make a break for it….. and the chase was on! The great chicken chase of 2007 ended with mom baiting it back in the chicken coup with a little food. I think the poor thing was tired from the chase too. Now it can rest in peace. MMMmm mMMmm Good! The kids thought the butchering was fascinating! They were thrilled to have a real life anatomy lesson.

They learned about hearts (blood and the vascular system), gizzards, liver and intestines. They also had fun keeping some pretty feathers. Having some home grown chicken in the freezer this winter will be nice!

Winter is not far off, and we will be in a hurry to get all of our 8 foot firewood logs out front, in to woodstove lengths and into the woodshed, we built last month. We got two cords now. We are going to get another 8 cords soon. Then we will need to get it cut and into the woodshed too. Then we should have more than enough to make it through our -60 below zero degree(F) winter.

    Hi,

Just found your blog this week. I love the idea of homesteading. I was just wondering how much it cost to live in Alaska? How do you manage – financially speaking? You probably have a lot to offer as information to help others live simple and frugal.

    Any information would be appreciated.

    Blessings
