Sticks and stones! :)

Yesterday we went for a drive about 25 miles out of town. Into the hills at the feet of the mountains along the Alaska HighWay. We stopped in this neat area that had lots of big rocks and boulders on the sides of the road. We let the kids each get a rock as big as they could carry and we found several “big ones” ourselves. The van was a little heavy coming home. We will see if we can tell what kind of rocks they are with our “rocks and minerals” field guide. We will have to think of some more types of school projects we can make out of our rocks and our adventure. We plan to put all the big rocks around our flower beds. Nothing else it was good physical education! :)

Today we got to go out and cut up some of our firewood. Dad cut it up with the chain saw and kids brought it to Mom who stacked it in the woodshed. We are quickly realizing we NEED a bigger chain saw for our homesteading needs! It is taking way to long to cut it all up.

So what fun we have had in our two days of hard labor….lol. Playing with “Sticks and Stones”. It is amazing How much fum some of the simplest things can be when we are working together as a family.

This is a picture we had done in August, when we got to visit with Jasons oldest son Glenn Leevi. He has now had his 14th birthday. He sure is growing tall! :D

Modesty in church? Where is it?

Amish dress
A while back, we attended a new church. However we were shocked and sad to find out that the most seductively dressed female out of the bunch was the pastor’s daughter! Through the course of these meetings, we found that occasionaly the wife of the pastor didn’t dress as modest, as we would have hoped. (It seems children will all ways try to push past whatever standard the parents live by.) This service grew worse as the “daughter” of the pastor began sing a special, and used a form of dance interpitation. While she was wearing a short shirt that looked like it was spray painted on, and low rise hip hugger type jeans. There was way to much skin and definition showing. We were shocked that this was allowed, and even coming from the churches leadership.

If we were members of this church, how would we be able to justify any modesty standards to our own children? We are supposed to be able to instruct our children that people in church leadership are people we can look up to. If the leadership is not living a Godly lifestyle, then we are doing the same as telling our children this way of life is ok and we give our approval. Which of course we do not, but children will see it that way. If this were a new convert things may be different, as all people are still learning, but with leadership we expect some of the major bases to at least be “covered”.

Many people say “just pick a church…”, “you’ll never find the perfect church!”, …and I agree we will never find a perfect congregation until Jesus returns. However, when we have children, we are responsible for what they see and hear and that will determine what they do….! So we can’t just “go anywhere”! There is a selectiveness we must enlist in our picking of a church to attend. So we ask the question where has modesty gone in the mainstream church? Where is it? Or is it only illusions and ideals we see in Bible verses, but not for us in real life today? This is why we find our selves conducting home church more often than not. We still love to visit some local congregations once in a while. We hope the Lord will provide a place where we may start a church with his help.

Butchering Time!

Butcher time
Today was a day, filled with adventure. We butchered our chickens and the kids loved the excitement of it all! The the last one tried to make a break for it….. and the chase was on! The great chicken chase of 2007 ended with mom baiting it back in the chicken coup with a little food. I think the poor thing was tired from the chase too. Now it can rest in peace. MMMmm mMMmm Good! The kids thought the butchering was fascinating! They were thrilled to have a real life anatomy lesson.

They learned about hearts (blood and the vascular system), gizzards, liver and intestines. They also had fun keeping some pretty feathers. Having some home grown chicken in the freezer this winter will be nice!

Winter is not far off, and we will be in a hurry to get all of our 8 foot firewood logs out front, in to woodstove lengths and into the woodshed, we built last month. We got two cords now. We are going to get another 8 cords soon. Then we will need to get it cut and into the woodshed too. Then we should have more than enough to make it through our -60 below zero degree(F) winter.
